How does a heat pump work?

In the heating mode, a heat pump takes heat from the outside air (even when it’s cold out) and transfers it inside your home. Now, you might be thinking, "How the heck can it get heat from cold air?" Well, even in freezing temperatures, there’s still some heat energy in the air. The heat pump uses a special fluid called a refrigerant to absorb that heat.

This refrigerant is really important. It’s like the magic liquid that makes the whole process work. The refrigerant is in a closed-loop system that runs through the heat pump. First, it enters the evaporator coil, which is outside the house in the heating mode. As the cold outside air blows over the evaporator coil, the refrigerant absorbs the heat energy from the air and turns from a liquid into a gas.

Once it’s a gas, the refrigerant is then compressed by a compressor. This is like squeezing a balloon; when you compress the gas, its temperature goes way up. The now super-hot gas moves through the condenser coil, which is inside your home. As the warm air inside your house blows over the condenser coil, the heat from the refrigerant is transferred to the air in your home, warming it up. Meanwhile, the refrigerant cools down and turns back into a liquid as it releases its heat. The liquid refrigerant then flows back to the evaporator coil outside, and the cycle starts all over again.

Now, let’s talk about the cooling mode. It’s pretty much the opposite of the heating mode. In the summer, when you want to cool your home, the heat pump reverses the process. The evaporator coil is inside your home, and the condenser coil is outside.

The refrigerant enters the evaporator coil inside the house. As the warm indoor air blows over the coil, the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air, making the air cooler. This cooled air is then blown back into your home by the blower fan. The refrigerant, now a gas again, is compressed by the compressor, which makes it even hotter. The hot gas then moves to the condenser coil outside, where the heat is released into the outside air. As the refrigerant cools, it turns back into a liquid and flows back to the evaporator coil inside, ready to start the cycle again.

One of the really cool things about heat pumps is that they’re super energy-efficient. They don’t actually create heat like a traditional furnace does; they just move it around. This means they use a lot less energy to heat or cool your home, which can save you a bundle on your energy bills in the long run.

Another advantage is that they’re really versatile. You can use them in a variety of climates. In milder climates, they can work as your primary heating and cooling system. In colder climates, they can be used as a supplement to a furnace during the coldest months.

Of course, like any piece of equipment, heat pumps have their limitations. In extremely cold temperatures, the amount of heat they can extract from the outside air decreases, so they might not be as effective. But modern heat pumps are getting better and better at working in cold conditions, so that’s less of an issue than it used to be.

Now, when it comes to choosing a heat pump for your home, there are a few things to consider. The size of your home is really important. You need a heat pump that’s the right size to heat or cool your space effectively. If it’s too small, it won’t be able to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. If it’s too big, it will cycle on and off too frequently, which can waste energy and reduce the lifespan of the unit.

Another thing to think about is the efficiency rating of the heat pump. Look for a unit with a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) for cooling and a high Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) for heating. These ratings tell you how efficient the unit is at converting energy into heating or cooling.

Also, consider the brand and the warranty. You want to buy a heat pump from a reputable brand that offers a good warranty. That way, if something goes wrong, you’re covered.
